In 1995 the Canadian and European house music scene was introduced to, and embraced the self-proclaimed “Queen of Ragga Dance”, Lady Shelly.

Born and raised in Red Hills, St. Andrew, Jamaica, Lady Shelly, other wise Known as Shelly-Ann found herself in Quebec Canada in 92. Within a matter of a year she began to work with a street hip hop group known as the “Unknown Squad”. The group earned their street credits by battling local M.C’s and performing in talent concerts.

One day while in class at Vanier College Shelly was approached by one of her rival M.C’s, JD. He was working with Premier Muzik and wanted a female to lay a verse on a track they were producing. Shelly ceased the opportunity and ended up recording an entire song as oppose to just a verse. The song, which is entitled “Sweet Party” went to number 16 on the Canadian dance charts and forced a three year recording deal.

While with Premier Muzik, Lady Shelly recorded hit singles Such as Macarena, That’s Me, EIEIO and Get it on. She did Nation wide tours with top recording artists like, Netzwerk, The Outhere Brothers, Reel 2 Reel, Emjay and many others. During that time it is was difficult to purchase a dance compilation and not find a hook, line or song by the talented Lady Shelly. When home from touring Shelly could be found at Bull’s-Eye studio working with her friend and mentor Bevin Jackson. The two spent hours recording dancehall tracks and learning as much as they can about the music business and general production.

Once her contract expired with Premier Muzik Lady Shelly felt she needed a break from the music scene and decided to take one by going back home. While in Jamaica, she was encouraged by friends and family members to return to Canada and continue to pursue her dreams. She did return to Canada but was in no rush to go back in the studio or on stage. Instead she focused her attention on learning the business of music and establishing her self as a businessperson as oppose to an artist.

Not long after, she realized that her desire to write, record and perform music was too strong and could not be ignored. At around the same time, Gino Olivieri, producer and co-founder of Premier Muzik was closing a deal with Isba records. The deal was a full-length album by Lady Shelly on Isba’s label. Without hesitation, Shelly got to work and within no time 15 tracks were recorded and the album was ready for the road. By July 2001 the first single from the album, “You Know”, was certified gold in Canada. Unfortunately, Shelly did not have a good relationship with the record label and wanted out of the deal. With the help of Gino Olivieri her wish was granted.

Ever since then Shelly has managed to keep a low profile Consulting with and guiding unsigned up coming artists. But once again her desire to do music has surfaced.

This time around Lady Shelly has decided to do things 100% her way and that meant doing it yard style. The first thing she did to ensure that was to get connected with a Jamaican producer. After careful consideration she contacted Garnett “Bobby Culture” Pottinger. Bobby immediately committed to the project. It took the two only three months to complete the record, which is titled, God First.

The title of the album clearly reflects Shelly’s religion and level of spirituality. Each song touches on an area in her life, ranging from her intimate relationships to her Determination to attain success in this business. Shelly has always tried to be honest especially on record. She is Passionate about music and that is heard in every line of every song on this album. After ten years on the underground music scene the queen of ragga dance is ready for commercial success, and she promises to do this while maintaining her authentic integrity.
