  Are You A Vegetarian?
Marilyn St. Hill- Super Fitness Model/Spokesperson

Are you a vegetarian? “A vegetarian is someone who chooses not to eat meat, poultry, fish or by products of meat and fish, such as gelatin” (The Vegetarian Cookbook, pg. 10) There are different types of vegetarians. For instance, lacto-ovo-vegetarians allow eggs and dairy products in their diets, while lacto-vegetarians avoid eggs. Vegans are known as vegetarians who avoid dairy products, eggs and non-food items produced from animals. In any event, there are different reasons why someone might become a vegetarian.

LOVE FOR ANIMALS
Many people turn to vegetarianism due to there love for animals. The thought of killing animals for food, morally does not sit well with some. Or, another argument is that the way the animals are raised/kept before killing may be inappropriate.

HEALTH BENEFITS
Many people decide to become a vegetarian for health reasons. Eating fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, lentils, eggs and dairy products provide a great wide range of nutrients, vitamins and minerals to your diet. Adding needed and required nutrients can only boost your immune system and improve your overall health. “Vegetarians experience 30% less heart disease, up to 40% less cancer and 20% less premature mortality.” (The Vegetarian Cookbook, pg. 10) Also, a person that follows a healthy vegetarian diet statistically has lower blood pressure, and less of a chance of acquiring diet-related diabetes and obesity.

BE AWARE
Just because you’re replacing your meat portion with cheese or a plate full of veggies, does not automatically mean your body is getting all the required nutrients. Vegetarian diets supply high amounts of vitamins C, E and beta-carotene, but vegetarians must be careful that they are getting the proper amounts of iron, zinc and B vitamins (especially B12). Vitamin B12 is imperative (in small amounts) to maintain the nervous system. Zinc is essential for a healthy immune system, while iron is needed to continue the formation of hemoglobin, which is the red pigment in blood. Vitamin C aids in the absorption of iron. Precisely, why it is important that if you are eliminating foods, you are also adding back the proper substitutions.

BALANCE
Make sure you are receiving a balance of carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. Protein from dairy like milk and yogurt can provide essential amino acids. Combining things like eggs, nuts, tofu, lentils and dairy with things like whole grains, potatoes and pasta will ensure that you maintain a desired range of nutrients. Also remember your fibre intake and you’ll be eating a healthy vegetarian diet!
