THE
DANGERS OF LOW-CARB DIETS
Marilyn St. Hill- Super Fitness Model/Spokesperson
For
several years there has been a craze
called "the low-carb diet".
The assumption that follows low-carb
diets is that if you eat little
or no carbs, you will lose weight.
True? Yes! Effective? No? Best method?
No? Long-term? Gosh no! Lets look
deeper into why.
THE
TRUTH
The
reason people will see weight-loss
in the first few weeks is
due to a couple of factors. One,
depleted glycogen stores. Glycogen
"forms an energy reserve that
can be quickly mobilized to meet
a sudden need for glucose, but one
that is less compact than the energy
reserve of triglycerides. Glycogen
is a polysaccharide of glucose (Glc)
which functions as the secondary
short term energy storage in animal
cells."(www.wikipedia.org) |
|
|
These
stores are lost from your muscles and
liver. Usually, with depleted glycogen,
comes dehydration. Dehydration is "the
removal of water from an object"
(www.wikipedia.org). Dehydration is a
huge factor in the initial weight loss.
The formation of glycogen is called glycogenesis.
This process is only successful when an
adequate amount of carbohydrates is consumed.
A low-carb diet does not support this
process. The glycogenesis process occurs
when gylcogen is broken down to form glucose,
which is then used as fuel. The depletion
of muscle glycogen causes the body to
fatigue quicker, which in turn will make
exercise and daily movements uncomfortable.
OTHER NEGATIVES
Basically,
your body needs carbs. Carbohydrates give
you energy (fuel), they play a significant
role for many vital organs like the kidneys,
the central nervous system and the brain.
That being said, low carb diets make you
lose weight because they restrict calories.
The old theory is still in play. Calories
in, calories out. If you are taking in
less calories than you are expending,
you lose weight. Simple enough? Good!
Looking at the cons, when your body is
neglected carbs for a certain period of
time, your body starts to produce ketones.
"These ketones are the leftovers
from fats broken down in the body. With
enough production of ketones the body
starts to "store fat" (www.diet.myfit.ca)
, a process known as ketosis. In plan
terms, the same chemical reaction that
made you lose the weight, eventually makes
you gain it back.
Also,
if you are exercising, but not eating
carbohydrates (which most people would
be exercising if they're trying to lose
weight), you end up taking the chance
of changing your body's hormone that regulates
metabolism. The hormone is known as T3.
T3 is a great hormone for weight-loss,
however low-carb diets usually reduce
this hormone. Another thing, when your
body is low-carb for too long, you can
increase insulin sensitivity. Increased
insulin sensitivity means that your body
is more likely to store fat.
WHAT
YOU CAN DO
What
you can do is eat more natural and unrefined
foods, they are generally better for your
body. Choose whole grain carbs that have
a low or medium glycemic index. Increase
your fruits and vegetables, which are
good carbs and help you consume important
vitamins, minerals and fiber.
Eat 40-60% of your calories from carbs,
keeping in mind that you're choosing the
right ones. You don't need to restrict
necessary foods to lose weight. You need
to pick proper foods choices, eat proper
portions sizes and eat at the proper times
throughout the day. Forget what you've
heard, start now and change your eating
habits for the rest of your life!
