  SUPERFOODS!

Essential for healthy living, superfoods should be added to every diet. Adding superfoods to your daily meals will change your whole life! Superfoods have been proven to prevent (and in some cases) reverse diseases like hypertension, cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes and some cancers.

WHAT ARE SUPERFOODS?
Superfoods are foods that contain a high phytonutrient content.
Phytonutrients being, "plant-derived essential nutrients scientifically confirmed as important to human health." (www.wikipedia.com) These foods are crucial for maintaining great health. Also, superfoods can prevent diseases, help with weight management and stop cravings.

 

Superfoods are synergy. Food synergy is "the interaction or two or more nutrients and other healthful substances in foods that work together to achieve an effect that each is individually unable to match." (www.self.com)

Eatings these foods means providing your body with the nutrients it needs. A healthier body equals improved energy, better motor skills and vision, better moods, skin, hair and nails.

WHAT FOODS ARE SUPERFOODS?
There are a big variety of foods that are considered "super". Looking for protein? Try turkey, wild salmon or sardines. Turkey, in the skinless breast form is the leanest meat you could eat. Salmon, a well-known protein source is also great for your eyes, heart and brain. Choosing wild salmon rather than any other kind is to decrease the chances of pollutants. Sardines, also good for your heart and brain, are also a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. Phosphorus, iron, niacin and vitamin B6 also make this protein source a good choice.

In fruit, go blue! Meaning, grab blueberries or goji berries. Blueberries can help reduce the chance of getting heart disease and cancer. The little round treats are also high in pottassium, vitamin C and antioxidants. Goji berries, which are becoming more popular, have eighteen amino acids, more beta-carotene than carrots and help curb your hunger.

In veggies, go green! Spinach or broccoli, or beans. Broccoli helps detoxify our bodies of carcinogens, and has been named the number one food for preventing multiple cancers. Beans are a great because they are low in calories. Beans help you maintain weight because they help control blood sugar levels. Spinach is a superfood because it helps the brain, eyes, skin, heart and immunity. Due to the amount of vitamin A (vitamin A contains carotenoids which helps your eye adapt from bright light to darkness) it can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration. "Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease associated with aging that gradually destroys sharp, central vision." (www.nei.nih.gov) We use our central vision daily for things like driving or reading. Central vision is needed in order for us to see objects clearly.

WHAT'S NEXT?
There are many more superfoods that have not been mentioned. For example, superfood carbs or superfood fats. The next step is doing your homework. Educate yourself on what foods are categorized as superfoods and why. Then, hit the grocery store. The majority of superfoods can be found in any grocery or market. Finally, start eating the superfoods. Find a way to incorporate these new foods into your diet.

Remember, the key is to eat a combination of superfoods, not just one or two. Superfoods work best together. Consuming the best foods possible will leave you happy and healthy.
